Workaholic Jordan Fletcher is interviewing for a job that will mean relocating to New York. A family vacation is planned with his wife, Jayne, their young son, Pete, and Jayne's father, Grandpa, whose World War II stories have always seemed far-fetched to Jordan.
In Denver, Grandpa and Pete board a small plane for Big Mountain Lodge. Delayed by an important business banquet, Jordan and Jayne will follow. The ill-fated craft loses power and crash-lands in the mountains. The pilot suffers a broken leg, and Grandpa and Pete leave the injured pilot behind and set out to search for help. Unknown to Pete, Grandpa's heart medicine was in the luggage that was jettisoned to lighten the plane.
At the banquet, Jayne has become uneasy at the banquet and slips away to call the lodge. She learns Pete and Grandpa are missing and a mountain rescue team has been called out. The Fletchers finding that their priorities have suddenly changed, rush to Denver and join the search.
Meanwhile, Pete and Grandpa take shelter in a cave that turns out to be a bear's den. Grandpa fends off the beast with a torch. During the night, they're joined by a solitary brown dog of whom Pete is terrified. Grandpa urges him to conquer his fear and Pete removes a stone from the dog's paw. From that point on, 'Rocky' becomes their constant companion.
Grandpa and Pete hear a rescue chopper, but are unable to attract attention. They make a perilous descent into Wildcat Canyon where Rocky scares away a bobcat, and alerts them to a menacing pride of mountain lions. Once past the canyon, they head for the river, but Grandpa becomes too exhausted to go on. Pete makes a raft but it breaks apart in the rapids, knocking Grandpa unconscious. Pete then uses a floating log to keep them both afloat.
Guided by a mother's intuition, Jayne persuades the searchers to fly over the same area again. This time they follow the river and spot Pete and Grandpa adrift. With a lifeline, they rescue the pair and also help Rocky make his way ashore. Grandpa is evacuated, and Pete leads rescuers back to save the injured pilot.
During the celebration at the lodge, the rescuers laud Pete and Grandpa as heroes. And back home, Jordan sees proof of earlier heroism -- the silver star and commendation Grandpa received from President Truman for his wartime services.
When Jordan receives a call offering him the job in New York, he turns it down. Having almost lost his son, Jordan's outlook has changed and his family has now become his number one priority.
