Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment

This spectacular drama filled with stunning sets and costumes brings to life one of the world's great literary achievements. This intriguing drama, set in 19th century Russia, touches upon the questions and issues that still plague our 20th century society: morality, ethics and conscience.

The story begins with the theorizing of a young student, Rodya, who perceives himself to be an extraordinary person. He further believes that extraordinary people, merely because of their greatness, have the right to commit any crime and remain unpunished - if it is for the betterment of society. Feeling obligated to right his country's injustices, he murders a corrupt pawnbroker and his innocent sister who accidentally witnesses the crime. While Rodya avoids immediate prosecution, he descends into the gnawing and agonizing clutches of guilt and ultimately the hands of justice.

This legendary tale based on the novel by Fyodor Dostoevsky takes a penetrating look at how one man's selfish act forever changes his life and the lives of everyone close to him. It is the story of murder and its consequences --a tale of suspense without equal. As daring now as it was more than one hundred years ago, this story puts forth the possibility that murder if committed by a superior intellect, may be justified.
